India and West Indies’ cricket rivalry has long been one of the great stories in Test cricket history. Over decades it has witnessed success and failure alike as its balance shifted between Caribbean pacers’ dominance and India spin supremacy; making for an exciting contest between both nations.
Both teams need a victory here to keep their chances alive of reaching the semi-finals.
1971
The 1971 tour to West Indies was an historic occasion for India. It marked the first time their team beat West Indies away from home and won five-match series away from home; also, India won its inaugural Test series overseas and started their batting era under Sunil Gavaskar’s guidance.
Indian cricket’s victory was an immense triumph; all the more so because it occurred in West Indies and was supported by thousands of India’s East Indian descendants. Ajit Wadekar led an excellent squad, including Sunil Gavaskar (four centuries on tour and double century at Port of Spain); Dilip Sardesai also produced some outstanding performances; Gavaskar hit four centuries and made four double hundreds, as did Ralph Gosein with his controversial decision to run out Fredrick for one of India’s three wins against Bangladesh (on February 7). Ralph Gosein made no misstep in running out Fredrick for one more crucial wicket; his decision proved pivotal.
India won the toss and elected to bat, starting off strongly and reaching 247/5 at the end of day one’s play. Gavaskar and Sardesai stood out for India, adding a 177-run partnership and giving India an early edge.
Indian bowlers were equally impressive; Abid Ali, Eknath Solkar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan all took more than four wickets apiece to transform how the game was played and give India confidence for future success overseas. Additionally, it marked a triumphant win for Indira Gandhi who gambled early election calls as she appeared close to winning her seat.
1983
There are numerous stories and anecdotes surrounding India’s victory in the 1983 World Cup against West. Ranveer Singh as Kapil Dev in the recent Bollywood movie 83 provided a snapshot of this unlikely journey as they went from complete underdogs to becoming world champions.
The Prudential Cup ’83 – officially known as the 1983 Cricket World Cup – was hosted in England and Wales and included eight teams. Teams were split into two groups of four with each team playing each other twice before moving forward to semi-finals; India made its World Cup final debut during this edition at Lord’s.
India managed to score an impressive total of 183 runs in 54.4 overs despite losing the toss, but their batsmen were constantly under pressure as Andy Roberts, Malcolm Marshall, and Michael Holding exploited India’s weak batting lineup with their three attack bowlers; Krishnamachari Srikkanth and Madan Lal fought back with resistance while Roger Binny even made a significant contribution despite being bowled for a duck!
India successfully defended their low target of 184 with bowlers who exploited weather and pitch conditions perfectly to limit West Indies to 140 runs in response. Balwinder Sandhu took the first wicket by dismissing Gordon Greenidge cleanly while Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal each managed one wicket each to secure this historic win for India; which still stands as one of the lowest totals successfully defended in World Cup final history and also became the first Asian nation ever to claim victory at this championship tournament.
2002
Virendra Sehwag was in top form in this match and tore through West Indies bowlers like Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Chris Gayle with ease. Their amazing bowling proved too much for India, though. India scored 196 runs opening partnership between Saurav Ganguly and Virendra Sehwag to claim dominance over this contest; however West Indies bowlers such as Ramnaresh Sarwan, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Gayle kept up pressure with some excellent bowling performances of their own to fight back with amazing bowling from their respective sides to remain competitive throughout.
And yet despite this, the Indian crowd began misbehaving badly, throwing items onto the pitch that threatened player safety and overwhelming security personnel who tried to control them but ultimately failed. Finally, due to prematurely stopping due to this crowd behavior and declaring India winners by way of D/L method; India were declared winners through their D/L method victory and were declared the victor. It remains a puzzle why this happened!
2006
India won their first Caribbean match since 1983 with a four-wicket victory thanks to Rahul Dravid’s century and Mohammad Kaif’s timely unbeaten 67 from Mohammad Kaif and Mohammad Pathan, respectively. Brian Lara had made 14 runs before being caught off Pathan while Ramnaresh Sarwan scored an unbeaten 98 off 95 deliveries for West Indies batting first.
Munaf Patel scored off the opening ball, before Yuvraj Singh struck two fours to give himself 12 runs from three overs, but was bowled by Marlon Samuels leaving India needing 11 from their final over. But Dravid and Kaif added 123 for their fourth wicket partnership as India reached their target with one ball to spare and reached the top spot in both Test rankings and ODI world rankings with this victory.
2023
India have endured an eventful tournament and are poised on the brink of reaching their semi-final destination with one game left – West Indies’ match at Eden Gardens is of immense importance; victory means they will secure their position while defeat will mean they face early elimination from this tournament.
Both teams have shown marked improvements since their initial matches of this World Cup. India have become a well-oiled domination machine while Shai Hope’s Windies boast some dangerous six-hitters who have hit more sixes than any other side in this World Cup, creating a real threat on any pitch they enter.
Indian bowlers must perform at their peak to defend a modest total. After getting off to an encouraging start with Hetmyer and McCoy taking important catches in their first innings, things became somewhat unstable during middle overs, when both Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma fell cheaply before Hetmyer and Holder returned with solid partnerships which eventually fell prey to Romario Shepherd’s off-speed short ball delivery.
Expect both teams to attack today on an ideal pitch with plenty of runs up for grabs. India should enjoy a significant edge thanks to their deep batting lineup, home advantage, and desperation – making them favourites to take the victory here. To know more about sports just follow us: Sports Byte
